I get up in the morning and look forward to just coming here, checking on what everybody's doing and what we're going to cook and what we're going to sell. As far as I'm concerned, this is not like work. But, you've got to have key items on a menu, your go to items.Ī: I don't think I'll ever retire. Guys will get together and put money in restaurants. This restaurant has been here 38 years, and we have six people who have worked with us for 30 years.Ī: Short on capital and neglect. We've got a lot of employees that have been here a long time. Every room has a private bathroom, whilst many also retain.

Would you agree?Ī: You gotta be surrounded by a lot of good people, which we are. Rooms at the Highland Guest House have a flat-screen TV, clock radio and free tea and coffee. Q: Restaurants are hard businesses to run, it seems to me. Even items on their menu, they don't have to get an OK from nobody. But, if you go into any chain restaurant you really can't get them. Them guys have to have a lot of corporate meetings and things. Q: What advantage does an independent have?Ī: We can change things on a dime. I think independent restaurants are making a big, big comeback. As far as independent restaurants go, we got a little bit of a reprieve when this economy went kaput for awhile. Q: What are the challenges - and advantages - of running a family business?Ī: Just keeping up on things, and keeping everything up to date, and keeping your restaurant all nice, spic-and-span clean. Once I started doing this, that's all I ever wanted to do.
I stick around here, and eventually everyone will show up and you get to see everybody. Q: What do you like about being a restaurateur?Ī: I like all the people who come in all the time, coming up with real good to food to serve everybody. But, my brother passed away about four years ago.Ī: I was going to go to college and lasted about two weeks and came home. There's never a need to worry about the safety of your vehicle because covered parking is available for residents. And then, after that, this place was successful, and I opened a place out in Howell, called Tomato Bros., with my brother, Greg.
